Sixth Sunday of Easter
Matthew 28: 16-20 What does the Church celebrate on Ascension Day? We are being invited to have faith in an important aspect of the Risen Lord’s Paschal Mystery. The Saviour was present to his chosen disciples after the Resurrection, laying the foundations of the Church’s faith. That extraordinary presence was of limited duration, and soon gave way to another manner of presence - as the Saviour guides the Church through the blessings of his own Spirit. Today’s liturgy gathers three passages of the New Testament that give expression to the faith of the first Christians in this phase of the Paschal Mystery. Our Lady Help of Christians
The Feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians, which is celebrated on May 24, dates back to the sixteenth century, which was not a peaceful time in Europe. In 1571, Catholics throughout the continent joined in praying the rosary in hopes of prevailing over military forces that had long sought to expand into Europe. This is a significant feast in Australia, because in 1844 the bishops nominated Mary as a special patron of Australia. National Sorry Day
National Sorry Day is an important time to remember the injustices done to the Stolen Generations and the sadness and damage the events from the past have had on Australia’s First Peoples. Stolen Generations refers to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities. Acknowledgement of Country Let us take a moment of silence to remember the traditional owners of this land. May we respect their story, their tradition and their culture. Let us stand to remember them with one minute of silence. Pray Prayers of Intercession For all Indigenous people who have experienced pain and loss. All: God of Mercy, hear our prayers. For Australians to accept others, regardless of colour, race or creed. All: God of Mercy, hear our prayers For guidance as our country and people continue to walk pathways to a spirit of Reconciliation All: God of Mercy, hear our prayers. We make these prayers through Christ our Lord All: Amen Apology to the Stolen Generation on behalf of the Australian Government and the Australian people. Praying when things change
There have been a great deal of changes in 2020. Pray that we will embrace the change. Oh Lord, thank You for going before me and for being with me through the changes in my life. I know that You will never leave me nor forsake me therefore I will be fearless when life begins to take unexpected turns or uncertain paths. Thank You for being the rock that I can lean on; the rock that never crumbles so that I may walk firmly in change, Amen.
