22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 14:1, 7-14 Gospel Reflection Jesus was sometimes invited to a meal by those who were curious to hear him. They were sometimes unfriendly to him we know from the gospel accounts. But most of his hosts were probably motivated by curiosity to hear what this teacher who was making such a stir had to say. This reconstruction of one such meal by Luke shows the Saviour’s skills as a teacher; and the kind of challenge he brought to those who were leaders in the community. Those at table with are ‘watching him closely’; he knows that he is expected to entertain them with his table talk. The Importance of Forgiveness
Peter went up to Jesus and said, ‘Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? As often as seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘Not seven times, I tell you, but seventy-seven times.’ We pray for peace in our hearts. All: We pray for peace. (Pause for 5 seconds) We pray for forgiveness from those we have hurt. All: We pray for forgiveness. (Pause for 5 seconds) We pray for a new start with each other. All: We pray for a new start. (Pause for 5 seconds) Let us make the Sign of the Cross slowly and reverently. All: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Image by Russell Davies. The People Cross
Light votive candles. Invite students to think about and write the name of a friend or family member they wish to pray for, on a piece of paper or card. Lead them to place the names on the floor or wall in the shape of a large cross. The group then stands in a circle around the cross and prays silently a prayer of intercession for the person they named. Conclude this prayer with an Amen response. |
