34th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JOHN 18:33-37 Today’s feast is a relative newcomer to the Church’s liturgy – established by Pius XI, last century, as the Church’s response to the emergence of totalitarian regimes. There is a certain irony in the fact that when it was established earthly kings and queens had become little more than figureheads. Gospel Reflection Image: Distant Shores Media/Sweet Publishing. Advent “Chain of Stars”
This Sunday marks the beginning of the season of Advent. The following activity can be done over the next four days. Using Scripture students will be able to reflect on the four Sundays of Advent around the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. Activity Students will use stars to create a Christmas garland. Punch holes at the top and bottom of each star. Each day, throughout the week, a star will be added to the chain and will be linked with yarn, ribbon, or string. Begin with two “blank” stars and save the remaining blank stars each week to be used at the end of each word. Incorporate the Advent “Chain of Stars” into your class prayer space or devotions. Read and reflect on the Scripture passage indicated for each day of the week, and then add the stars to the chain for each word. On the back of each star, write the Scripture citation and a prayer around the theme. HOPE: Scripture Passage Consider this: We do not need to hope for anything if we have everything. Here, Luke tells of a man who seemed to have everything but really lacked the most important thing. Image: Starry Garland by fen-tastic. 2007. Used with permission Creative Commons Licence, Flickr |

PEACE: Scripture Passage
Consider this: We often think of Peace in terms of human relationships, and that kind of Peace is certainly a blessing. Here, the Bible talks about Peace with God – a much greater blessing of infinite worth – which is only possible because of Jesus’ death on the cross. Image: Peace by Lauren Manning. 2008. JOY: Scripture Passage
Consider this: As children of God, we have every reason to be joyful, but the heavy burdens of this life make it easy to forget that Joy. Listen to how Jesus himself encouraged his friends to expect Joy to follow after the most sorrowful time they would experience. Image: Joy Set by Julie. 2011. LOVE: Scripture Passage
Consider this: The opposite of Love is not hate. It is selfishness. Love requires giving, and the greatest love gives everything and takes nothing in return. That is the kind of love described in this passage. Image: Merry Christmas! by Jillian Chilson. 2014. Used with permission Creative Commons Licence, Flickr. |

Feast of St Andrew
O Glorious Saint Andrew, you were the first to recognise and follow the Lamb of God. With your friend Saint John you remained with Jesus for that first day, for your entire life, and now throughout eternity. As you led your brother Saint Peter to Christ and many others after him, draw us also to Him. Teach us to lead others to Christ solely out of love for Him and dedication in His service. Help us to learn the lesson of the Cross and to carry our daily crosses without complaint so that they may carry us to Jesus.
