The Transfiguration
Teacher Background
Each year of the three-year cycle, the gospel of the second Sunday of Lent tells of the Transfiguration. This year we have Luke’s account. Luke’s presents this incident as Jesus instructs his disciples - preparing them for his journey to Jerusalem to meet his fate.

The Feast of St Patrick  March 17
St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints. He was born in Roman Britain and when he was fourteen or so, he was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans but Patrick turned to God and wrote his memoir, The Confession. In The Confession, he wrote:
"The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain."

SAINT JOSEPH

Picture
Feast of St Joseph
St Joseph, who embraced truth and courage and was known by many titles including – the Dreamer; the Worker; the Protector; the Carpenter, and is the patron for the Josephite Sisters, founded by Mary MacKillop and Fr Julian Tenison Woods.

St Joseph is also known as Joseph the Refugee, which highlighted his connection to the plight of asylum seekers and refugees. Joseph’s story of flight as a refugee 2000 years ago was not dissimilar to refugee stories of today. Joseph chose to seek out asylum in another land and risked much to do so.
Prayer Reflection
Close your eyes and reflect on the following statements as they are read out....

Think about what he had given up with an unknown future ahead.
He would have had to use up all the family savings.
Abandon their home and all their possessions.
Take just enough food and clothing to survive.
Leave family and friends, their support network and a town they had called home.
The safety of his family was ultimately Joseph’s only concern.
The job, shelter and food would come later… hopefully.
Today in Australia, Joseph would have to wait in a detention centre to be processed with the prospect only of being able to stay in detention or to be sent home. Worse still, separated from his wife and child and sent to Nahru or Manus Island.
Refugees and asylum seekers were not political statements but people like you and Joseph.
They are seeking a better life free from fear of death, free from war.
How can we deny them?

Pray in response to Peter's Story.  Watch the video, then pray with the images from the Photo gallery for this story.
Questions for reflection....
What do I see/hear in these images?
How do I feel when I look at these images?
What is God saying to me through these images? What is my prayer to God for Peter and the people of the Solomon Islands ?

God of our Harmony...
You created all people in your image.

We thank you for the astonishing variety of races and cultures in Australia and in our community.
Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of friendship, and show us your presence in those who differ most from us.
Grant that we may always promote the justice and acceptance that ensures lasting peace and racial harmony.
Grant that we may show equal respect to all persons of different cultures that we may come across.
And help us to remember and appreciate that we are one country, with many stories.
